Keeping A Lid On Air Conditioning Costs: LP TechShield
Combining the new GAF Camelot lifetime designer shingles with LP TechShield Radiant Barrier is giving the Southern Living Showcase Home, being built in Nashville’s Dorset Park, a great one-two punch in combating home heating and air conditioning bills.
As outlined in a previous blog you can find here, Castle Homes is installing the relatively new product purchased locally from Nashville Lumber Company called GAF Camelot Designer Shingle. Critical to this process is the LP TechShield applied to the roof prior to the shingles.
This innovative product from LP has been used by builder Alan Looney, president of Castle Homes, for several years with provable results.
“As part of our green building initiative, we have been using LP TechShield for several years and find it makes a huge difference in attic temperatures by at least 20 degrees. The radiant barrier reflects the heat resulting in a cooler attic. This impacts upstairs rooms including Home Theatre and Game Rooms many times located above a garage and helps mechanical systems run more efficiently,” Looney said.
According to LP Building Products, LP TechShield is made by laminating a thin, durable sheet of aluminum to LP OSB Sheathing. After the foil lamination process takes place, the panel is incised, resulting in small holes called VaporVents that penetrate the foil, glue and OSB substrate. This innovative product helps block radiant heat in the roof from entering the attic, keeping the attic cooler, lowering energy costs and making the home more comfortable. In the end, the patented VaporVents technology allows it to dry more quickly from construction moisture than other radiant barrier.
The LP TechShield works as an important part of the overall systems operation for the Southern Living Showcase Home. Looney said the end results will be reducing the cost of the HVAC and the impact on the environment.
