Eat ‘n Greet: Discover What’s Cooking in Kitchen Design

Posted on: October 20th, 2011 by Southern Living Showcase Home No Comments

In a truly southern home, the kitchen may as well be called the ‘living room.’ It’s where we gather and chatter, commiserate and contemplate. I’ve been to many events in grand homes with palatial sitting areas, decks and views yet all I can recall are the kitchens. Maybe it’s the anticipation of what’s cooking or the warmth and familiarity of the space. Whatever draws us in, the kitchen is, indeed, the heart of the home.

In the Nashville Southern Living Showcase Home (presently making its debut in Dorset Park just off Granny White Pike), the kitchen is the heart of the matter—by design. The first floor layout embraces our natural inclination to gather in the kitchen. The bright, open space is only a few steps from the front door and flanked by inviting areas for milling, relaxing and (of course) dining. The space embodies the concept of southern hospitality.

Mind you, this is a “Showcase Home,” so no detail has been spared in presenting the absolute latest and greatest in a chef’s kitchen. Design elements and product selections were made by Caroline Weigel and Heather Looney, who form the in-house design team of show house builder Castle Homes. From premier appliances and hardware to durable surfaces and generous conveniences, this kitchen has it all.

Here’s a quick list of the must-see touches:

-  A highly functional center island constructed of Calcutta Gold honed marble with thickened edge, containing a pop-up lifter for a kitchen mixer, towel pull-out and Asko dishwasher
-  Perimeter counters in Caesarstone (a non-porous, mineral-based surfacing product) with a mosaic natural stone backsplash
-  Maple cabinets, custom crafted for the space by Larsen Cabinet Shop and painted an “Origami White” for a fresh, open feel
-  A Wolf dual fuel 48” range with double ovens, topped by a pewter finished hood, as well as a Wolf microwave drawer
-  An enameled, cast-iron farmhouse sink with apron front and parq chrome, bridge-style faucet—both by Kohler
-  A Sub-Zero 27” wide, tower refrigerator/freezer with a new flush inset with cabinet panel doors
-  Entire area, including adjacent breakfast nook, features low VOC paint, 3”-thick, coffee-stained oak flooring and fresh, ample and attractive lighting and natural color schemes for walls and upholstery

“This showcase home is about southern hospitality, and we didn’t forget a key part of being hospitable is cooking,” Designer Heather Looney summarizes. “Every square inch of this area is inviting, comfortable and welcoming…and ready for gourmet cooking.” While this home is a true showcase of the grandest products and designs, Looney offers some practical design insights so we can all add a little “Southern Living” to our kitchens. Here are the take-aways.

Counter intelligence: Choose durable surfaces for lasting functionality and beauty, and keep those surfaces as uncluttered as possible to make food preparation simple.
Bright ideas: Don’t skimp on good lighting in the kitchen, and select soft, natural colors for draperies, cabinets and walls to enhance the view from within.
Appliance reliance: Invest in appliances that will meet your family’s needs long term. Even if you can’t attain the Sub-Zero or Wolf selections, opt for good performing, sturdy and generously proportioned refrigerators, dishwashers and ranges.
Soft landings: Contrast the hard surfaces of kitchen cabinets and counters with plenty of upholstered seating and drapery panels.
Open up: If you’re considering a remodel, find ways to open up space around your kitchen to make all that southern gathering and chattering more comfortable and possible.

Magical Moroccan Powder Bath Inspired By Southern Living Pillows

Posted on: October 19th, 2011 by Southern Living Showcase Home No Comments

A dash of Moroccan magic with a southern twist is the feel of the luxurious downstairs powder bath of Nashville’s only Southern Living Showcase Home with inspiration taken from a Southern Living feature on Moroccan Palace Pillows.

The bold Moroccan Palace Pillows featured in Southern Living inspired the powder bath of Nashville’s Southern Living Showcase Home opening October 21

Dana Tucker, of Bella Tucker Decorative Finishes, says the pattern has been adapted for the showcase home in elegant tone-on-tone colors.  ”After researching how this pattern could be applied to the powder bath we are creating, we found the perfect Stencil Crème from Royal Design Studio to use. () With a Magnetic Grey base (Sherwin Williams #7058), we’ve used Pearl Oyster as the stencil overlay which is a great color complement for the home’s main area which has Sherwin Williams’ Oyster White,” Tucker said. “The result is a very striking but smart use of a bold and intriguing pattern in a smaller space and be sure and notice the hand-applied .”

Tucker said she enjoys exploring what’s new and different in design trends. Graphic patterns, like the one used in the powder bath, are a fresh take on the idea of reflecting world travels but with a regional adaption.

Throughout the Southern Living Showcase Home, global adventures are woven into room designs from the Waterford, Ireland chandelier and Indonesian teak root pedestal of the dining room to the African masks incorporated into the gentlemen’s study which is adjacent to the Bella Tucker powder bath.

iPad Simplifies Home Technology

Posted on: October 19th, 2011 by Southern Living Showcase Home No Comments

For years premiere home tours have been touting home technology advances which still required the company’s special control pad and remote gizmos. Step into Nashville’s only Southern Living Showcase Home, open through November 6 in Brentwood, pull out your iPhone or iPad, loaded with a Control4 app, and you can turn on, up and off your lights, music, HVAC and home security for starters.

The latest advances in home technology have wisely taken advantage of the consumer love of smart phones. The showcase home’s builder, Castle Homes is working with Brentwood-based Alarms, Controls &  Electronics, Inc.  (A.C.E. Technologies), the area’s oldest, locally owned security company, in developing a comprehensive, user-friendly system for the showcase project. Utilizing Control4 technology,  “flexibility, affordability and everyday ease” are just some of the qualities, Brett Wright, Castle Homes project manager, likes.

“Remote manufacturers might not like these advances, but it eliminates the need for five remotes to control your entertainment system. Up to $3,000 in system controls are now replaced by your multi-use, $499 iPad and you are also able to operate the system off-site,” Wright said. “And, in case you can’t put your hands on your iPad, an InfinityEdge touch screen is placed in a central location.”

Tom Lundborg, president of A.C.E. Technologies, gives Brett Wright, Castle Homes project manager, an iPad touch screen tutorial.

Everyday ease and effortless entertainment features include:

- Never enter a dark home again. Set your lighting system to “welcome home scene” for your family. And, in addition to outside motion detectors, the system can be programmed for 1 a.m. outside illumination for additional security.
-Default your televisions to your favorite networks like Bravo or ESPN.
- Pause the ballgame in the kitchen and then pick up where you left off in the Media Room with a video distribution system – sharing video sources throughout the home.
- Have different music playing in various rooms. Also, look up in the showcase home and notice the new SpeakerCraft Profile speakers with a magnetic rim and paintable mesh grid.
- No more nagging dad with the ultimate “turn off the lights” feature.  System motion detectors determine when no one is in the room and turn off lights automatically.
- Turn on your fireplace from your favorite chair with a ZigBee wireless control which can be retrofitted.

The system also boasts an important safety feature. With the ZigBee wireless technology, the system has a fire detector which shuts off heating and air preventing smoke from circulating, lights are activated and a wave file contains the audio message “a fire has been detected” which can be customized to your own voice and message.

Tom Lundborg, president of A.C.E. Technologies, says the showcase home’s system runs around $14,000. “Life and technology potential are so complicated. The Control4 system provides system organization and one-stop management. It is easily retro-fitted and wireless. Ultimately, it can save you money by helping you run your home lighting and air more efficiently and can even eliminate renting video boxes from your local cable and satellite providers.”

Southern Living Home Show Uses New Industrial-Whimsey Influence For Imaginative Boy’s Room

Posted on: October 5th, 2011 by Southern Living Showcase Home No Comments

Designer Lee Shacklock is turning out to be the Willy Wonka of Nashville’s only Southern Living Showcase Home as she creates a little boy’s “paradise” with a bedroom packed full of imagination. Opening to the public on October 21 at Dorset Park off Granny White Pike at Old Hickory Boulevard in Brentwood, with her own unique vision, Shacklock’s design team is creating a boy’s room with a unique, industrial whimsy theme.

“From our time machine with working parts wrapped in an incredible world mural to an up-cycled bed with working parts, we are embracing the values of green builder Castle Homes while creating a playful, engaging environment,” says Shacklock.

Faux artisan William Bell is applying imported Spatula Stuhhi beads to the world map mural giving the ocean a shimmering effect.

Shacklock, known for her award-winning home tour designs, is the mother of two sons, Jesse (DJ Kidsmeal) and Sam (producer and member of Sam and Tre Band), and knows the importance of creating a boy’s bedroom full of adventure.

“I always allowed my boys to express themselves, and, if they wanted to dye their hair, I was the one helping them with product. It is fun to think outside the box and create an unexpected and delightful space,” Shacklock said.

With recycling and re-purposing an important element of the showcase home, Shacklock is using her bedroom to show how ordinary items can be repurposed with a little paint and determination.

“We are creating a desk and a curtain rod from ordinary pipe fittings that you can find at Home Depot and are dirt cheap. People can do and create original fun things for their kids rooms and are only limited by their imagination,” Shacklock said.

To check out her industrial whimsy themed boy’s room, visit the Southern Living Showcase Home open select days October 21 through November 6 in Dorset Park. Built by Castle Homes and presented by LP Building Products, Ronald McDonald House Nashville is the event’s benefiting charity. Tickets can be purchased via www.castlehomes.com or at the gate. Check-in at the Southern Living Showcase Home via Facebook and Foursquare and a book will be donated by Books From Birth Middle Tennessee to the Ronald McDonald House.  Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for more.
