FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New York, NY and Nashville, TN – (March 6, 2013) Southern Living and Fontanel Properties, owner of Nashville’s famed Barbara Mandrell estate, together announce that the 2013 Southern Living Idea House at Fontanel will be open to the public beginning June 29th. The home, built in Middle Tennessee farmhouse style, will be open to the public for tours Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until December 29th. The home is located at 4105 Whites Creek Pike in Nashville, TN 37189.
“We love the land and the history at Fontanel, and jumped at the chance to become part of a Nashville landmark,” said Lindsay Bierman, Editor-in-Chief of Southern Living. “Our refined farmhouse draws from the city’s rich architectural legacy to look like it has always been there.”
Southern Living assembled a first-rate team for the project. The developer is Fontanel Properties LLC. The architects are the renowned firm Historical Concepts. The builder is Castle Homes and the landscaping is done by Page/Duke Landscape Architects. The décor is designed by interior designer and Southern Living contributing editor Phoebe Howard.
Beginning in June, the public can tour the home for $12 and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the charitable partner on the project: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. In October, the home will be redecorated for the holidays. Unlike other Southern Living Idea Houses, this home will remain on the Fontanel property and will later be open as a luxury boutique hotel. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 3, 2012 and attended by Mayor Karl Dean, and nearly 100 industry VIPs, local dignitaries and others. The build has moved forward at a rapid rate, with a completion date set for mid-May at which time the furniture will be installed and decorating will commence. The Southern Living editorial team will then shoot the home, scheduled to appear in the August issue of Southern Living.

About Historical Concepts
Historical Concepts is proud to provide traditional architecture, planning and place-making services to homeowners, developers and civic clients. The firm was founded in 1982 by James L. Strickland, with a passion for historical architecture and a desire to create great places. Originally a design/build firm, Historical Concepts consistently demonstrated the benefits of utilizing traditional design and planning in new construction with its classic southern homes and neighborhoods in the metro-Atlanta region. By the early 1990s, as the firm’s reputation for quality and attention to architectural detail began to spread throughout the southeast, interest in the firm’s architectural services grew. Responding to this demand, and a desire to affect architecture over a broader region, Historical Concepts began to focus exclusively on design.

About Phoebe Howard
In 1996, Interior designer Phoebe Howard and her husband Jim opened the doors to their first store, Mrs. Howard, in Jacksonville, Florida, hoping to demystify the decorating process for their customers. The goal was simple: to create a retail space that showcased Jim’s architectural and decorating talent, and Phoebe’s natural skills for buying, decorating and merchandising. With equal parts of exceptional customer service and a well-rounded mix of furniture, antiques and accessories, the store was an instant success. Five years later, they added another store, Max & Company, which features a younger, more modern appeal. Now, the Howards have Mrs. Howard and Max & Company stores in Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach, Atlanta, and Charlotte. Phoebe’s penchant for creating stylish spaces has evolved into her own brand of decorating, which has garnered praise from national media as well as her clients. Known for her fresh take on traditional style, Phoebe’s work can only be characterized by its timelessness and her mantra to “keep it pretty.” Her work is encapsulated in her first book, The Joy of Decorating, published by Stewart, Tabori & Chang.

NEW YORK, NY and NASHVILLE, Tenn. – (April 17, 2013) Six-year-old St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® patient Mae McNally will act as the St. Jude ambassador for the 2013 Southern Living Idea House at Fontanel.
The Idea House will be open to the public for tours beginning June 29th on Wednesday-Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets are $12. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Artwork created by St. Jude patients will be showcased in the Idea House which is located at 4105 Whites Creek Pike in Nashville, TN 37189. A feature on the home is scheduled to appear in the August issue of Southern Living.
A Tennessee native, Mae will visit the home and track its development. She will also be on hand to help the design team choose the patient art to adorn the walls and plant the garden. Her experiences will be highlighted in special blog posts on southernliving.com. Her involvement will help bring to life the lifesaving mission of St. Jude throughout the house for the hundred thousand-plus people expected to visit this year.
Mae, who was born in Nashville, was diagnosed with Wilms tumor, a cancer of the kidney, when she was just four years old. Mae’s family initially sought treatment at a local hospital. When her cancer returned Mae’s family came to St. Jude where children fighting cancer and other deadly diseases are treated with pioneering research and exceptional care. After undergoing extensive treatment Mae has recently been deemed cancer-free and was able to return home.
“Partnering with Southern Living on this exciting project, allows an opportunity for the public to help more patients like Mae receive treatment at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – where no family ever pays the hospital for anything,” said Richard C. Shadyac Jr., CEO of ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “Mae, whose charming personality and infectious joy make her a great fit for this project; will serve as a tangible link at the Idea House to the many children receiving groundbreaking treatment at St. Jude.”
Her first visit to the house will commence this Friday, April 19th – after school from 3-5 P.M.
Broadcasters: You are welcome to cover the visit and Mae will be available for interview.
“As a St. Jude parent I greatly appreciate Southern Living helping spread awareness and raise funds for their lifesaving work,” said Tricia McNally. “Mae definitely has strong design opinions. She loves a lot of purple and glitter, but I know that she will help infuse the house with some special St. Jude spirit and remind the people visiting of the good work they’re supporting.”
Unlike other Southern Living Idea Houses, this home will remain on the Fontanel property and will later open as a luxury boutique hotel. For more information, go to: southernliving.com/2013ideahouse
