Old World Texture Transforms Southern Living Showcase Home

Posted on: August 5th, 2011 by Southern Living Showcase Home No Comments

Old World texture is transforming the exterior of Nashville’s Southern Living Showcase Home in Dorset Park this week making it the first home in the region to use Sherwin William’s UltraCrete Acrylic Texture Coating.

French Country in style, the SouSouthern Living Showcase Home Exterior Construction Sherwin Williams Ultracretethern Living Showcase Home has clay-fired brick as its foundation. With a straight edge, the brick is heated to more than 2,000 degrees giving it enduring strength. Part of the Hallmark Series, it was acquired locally from Union Station Brick.

Castle Homes’ crew hand-brushed and rolled the Ultracrete resulting in a textured appearance according to Alan Looney, president of Castle Homes.’

“We want to achieve an old world appearance at an affordable price.  When working with Sherwin Williams, we came up with the idea of using a commercial product residentially creating an affordable, creative solution,” Looney said.

Mike Scott, Sherwin Williams’ District Sales Manager, said the product is great for exteriors and seen more commonly on commercial structures.

The exterior acrylic coating has a dimensional texture. Caroline Weigel, Castle Homes’ in-house interior designer, selected a warm shade called Softer Tan. (Sherwin Williams, SW 6141) Weigel said the color evokes a feeling of charming French countryside homes but with a fresher more modern feel.

In the end, the home has achieved a stunning century’s old appearance in ten days time with an elegant result. Mark your calendars to see the area’s only Southern Living Showcase Home open Thursdays through Sundays, October 21 – November 6.

Achieving Southern Livability

Posted on: July 22nd, 2011 by Southern Living Showcase Home No Comments

Livability for all ages is one of the first considerations when trying to bring southern living charm into your own home.  When designing the Southern Living Showcase Home, open for tour October 21-November 6 in Green Hill’s Dorset Park, Heather Looney, Castle Homes Vice President/Build Phase Designer, says a sense of togetherness and family should be at the core of your goals.

“Designing spaces for growing and aging families should be taken into consideration. This also makes your decisions more long-term budget conscious because they are spaces your family will grow into and will be more flexible, “ Looney said.

The dedicated study area is a classic example.  Looney said the popular built-in desk feature isn’t always a good idea when the kids will be heading off to college in a few years. Looney said when designing a home, you need to take into consideration the natural aging of your family.  Design an area for computers and study but allow the space to easily transition into a gift wrap or crafts space.

“One of the ways in which this is achieved in the Southern Living Showcase Home is the downstairs study. For the tour, it will be dressed as a formal study by Kippie Leland, ASID, Leland Interiors, LLC.  However, in the reality of living, this space can also be used as an additional downstairs bedroom for an aging parent or a newborn,” Looney.

Insulation: A Critical Piece Of The Science Of Home Building

Posted on: July 13th, 2011 by Southern Living Showcase Home No Comments

Nashville Insulation CompanyInsulation is something many of us take for granted when building a home, but it is a critical part of the science of building when chosen wisely and installed correctly.  In the Southern Living Showcase Home, being built by Castle Homes in Dorset Park, Guardian UltraFit DS fiberglass insulation has been selected with Nashville Insulation Company as the installer. (Check out the video of the UltraFit DS installation process here.

Seen earlier this year at the International Builders Show in Orlando, Alan Looney, president of Castle Homes, says the relatively new product for the area contains a limited amount of chemicals contributing the overall air quality of a home.

“It is an important part of our green building initiatives to seek out products to help improve the overall quality of our homeowners’ lives,” Looney said. “I was very impressed with Guardian’s Greenguard’s certification for use in schools and daycares indicating lower VOC levels and no added formaldehyde.”

The Guardian product also boosts a higher R Value than other traditional fiberglass products ensuring a better insulated home. The homeowner will definitely hear a difference with the sound control reduction element according to Alan Brothers, partner in Nashville Insulation Company.

“Once the product has been installed, there is a dramatic difference in the sound transmission of the home due to increased density of the product,” Brothers said.

Nashville Inulation Company InstallDuring the installation process, the Castle team ensures wind washing does not take place. Feeling a breeze around an electrical plug in wintertime indicates cold air streaming in and throughout your home’s walls. Literally, the air is washing the heat out of your home.

The Southern Living Showcase Home insulation is being installed in a six-sided configuration and ultimately sealed with a house wrap taking into account all the home’s nooks and crannies.  And, when glancing into the attic space, you won’t find insulation stuffed in the walls and sagging. In the end, the properly installed insulation works in concert with energy efficient windows and an engineered HVAC systems.
