Interior Design Inspiration : A Few Of Our Favorite Things

Posted on: November 2nd, 2011 by Castle Homes No Comments

Great design inspiration for your own home awaits you when you step inside the inviting seeded glass, knotty alder door of the Nashville’s only Southern Living Showcase Home open daily through Sunday, November 6. So, slip on the shoes covers, grab your camera and be prepared to take some great notes.

First, from the tour guide outlining paint colors and room sources to the display area in the garage, the Southern Living Showcase Home provides great building and design information. In addition, there are over a dozen designers and decorative artisans contributing to the project. Their website and contact information is included as well.

Bring some drama to a smaller space has been accomplished by designer Kippie Leland in the Gentlemen’s Study with an English Jacobean style coffered ceiling. Leland has taken a simulated clock face with hand-hammered zinc leaves as numbers creating a unique focal point for the room. Acquired from Garden Park Antiques in Nashville, the piece has huge wooden clock arms.

Not your college dorm captain’s chairs! Designer Jerome Farris has woven whimsy into the elegant Living Room with a new take on this element with chairs of silver-leaf, chrome and cream leather with raw-silk cushions.  You’ll also see a great example of using a neutral palette (Sherwin Williams’ Oyster White Walls) and adding dramatic splashes of teal and turquoise.

Convert a picture frame into a clever bulletin board. Bella Tucker Decorative Artists’ Brook Tucker found a nice size picture frame and converted it into a clever corkboard in the Tween Girl’s Bedroom by designer Kristen Finney.  Using the popular Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, described as faux paint for dummies, Tucker’s frame takes on a new personality.

Speaking of new ideas in paint, Castle Homes’ in-house designer Caroline Weigel has used dry-erase paint outlined with decorative moulding for clever family message board in the home’s mud room.

What, what do you do with the narrow wall of a two-story staircase? Local art expert Ron York called in one of his creative big guns Michael Bush to create a delightful triptych “Caballo” custom to the slender space framed by pretty sconces. York encourages homeowners’ to be unafraid of commissioning special pieces for their home. By doing so, you transform the transition space into an artful addition.

Rough and tumble boys with huge imaginations deserve a room which reflects that personality. Designer Lee Shacklock has re-purposed plumbing pipe into the curtain rod and desk frame of the Industry Whimsy themed boy’s bedroom. Using a world-map mural to wrap a flying machine, created by Tweed Baby Outfitters, completes this inspiring space.

Intimidated by Pink? Designer Amanda Burdge has provided the showcase home with a fresh take on this sometimes disastrous color. Weaving a vintage pink, a variation of the design industry’s top color of the year, she brings Southern glam to her soothing guest retreat.

Encourage your kiddos to linger at the dinner table through informal seating.  Desiger Beth Jones has long been an advocate of adding comfy seating to the kitchen table to please all members of the family.  Mom will love the look of the clever bench seating in the showcase home’s Breakfast Room while kids will appreciate the posture break.

Castle Homes’ in-house designer and company vice president Heather Looney recently appeared on WSMV’s More at Midday with an additional “Five Great Southern Living Showcase Home Ideas.”

Southern Living Home Show Uses New Industrial-Whimsey Influence For Imaginative Boy’s Room

Posted on: October 5th, 2011 by Castle Homes No Comments

Designer Lee Shacklock is turning out to be the Willy Wonka of Nashville’s only Southern Living Showcase Home as she creates a little boy’s “paradise” with a bedroom packed full of imagination. Opening to the public on October 21 at Dorset Park off Granny White Pike at Old Hickory Boulevard in Brentwood, with her own unique vision, Shacklock’s design team is creating a boy’s room with a unique, industrial whimsy theme.

“From our time machine with working parts wrapped in an incredible world mural to an up-cycled bed with working parts, we are embracing the values of green builder Castle Homes while creating a playful, engaging environment,” says Shacklock.

Faux artisan William Bell is applying imported Spatula Stuhhi beads to the world map mural giving the ocean a shimmering effect.

Shacklock, known for her award-winning home tour designs, is the mother of two sons, Jesse (DJ Kidsmeal) and Sam (producer and member of Sam and Tre Band), and knows the importance of creating a boy’s bedroom full of adventure.

“I always allowed my boys to express themselves, and, if they wanted to dye their hair, I was the one helping them with product. It is fun to think outside the box and create an unexpected and delightful space,” Shacklock said.

With recycling and re-purposing an important element of the showcase home, Shacklock is using her bedroom to show how ordinary items can be repurposed with a little paint and determination.

“We are creating a desk and a curtain rod from ordinary pipe fittings that you can find at Home Depot and are dirt cheap. People can do and create original fun things for their kids rooms and are only limited by their imagination,” Shacklock said.

To check out her industrial whimsy themed boy’s room, visit the Southern Living Showcase Home open select days October 21 through November 6 in Dorset Park. Built by Castle Homes and presented by LP Building Products, Ronald McDonald House Nashville is the event’s benefiting charity. Tickets can be purchased via www.castlehomes.com or at the gate. Three Tips For The Perfect Mural: Imagination Unleashed in Southern Living Showcase Home’s Boy’s Room

Take Rainwashed walls, add a simplified graphic mural depicting gears and a world map, sprinkle atop imported Spatula Stuhhi beads, and you get an idea of the imaginative designs being unleashed in the industrial whimsy themed boy’s room at Nashville’s only Southern Living Showcase Home opening October 21 in Dorset Park neighborhood.

Designer Lee Shacklock has compiled an impressive team for the boy’s room which will have award-winning faux artisan William Bell and award-winning muralist Leigh Ann Agee spinning their magic.

Agee’s, whose work has a very distinct and unique style, is creating wheels, mechanical parts and a world map which will have the translucent beads hand-applied and rubbed by Bell. Agee is also painting a giraffe being swept away by a time machine and cleverly repeats the animal element as a growth chart in the child’s closet. Agee has some thoughtful ideas for choosing a room mural:

* It is important to determine what excites your child’s imagination. This will help you determine the murals theme.
* Choose colors that are favorites of the child while keeping in mind the colors of the home. This can be achieved by choosing from within the same color spectrum.
* Look at shape and function of the room to determine where the mural goes taking into consideration the placement of a major furniture pieces like the bed and dresser.

Agee says ultimately, a well-executed mural creates atmosphere and puts a unique stamp on the space for the child making it special and one-of-a-kind.

Transitional Decorating For Tweens

Posted on: August 16th, 2011 by Castle Homes No Comments

Kids are heading off to school, happy sigh! If you are now thinking about redecorating your tween’s room, designer Kristen Finney has several great tips she’s using in her girl’s bedroom at Nashville’s Southern Living Showcase Home opening October 21 in Dorset Park.

“Transitional decorating is important when making your tween happy and ultimately saving you design dollars,” says Finney, a veteran home show designer. “The Southern Living Showcase girl’s retreat takes on the challenge of making this in-between kiddo, between 9 and 12, happy today and tomorrow,” Finney says. “Color choice is important and fear of selecting the perfect pink has driven a lot of people toward yummy shades of coral.  Ultimately, when chosen well, this color can have a longer wall-life for your teen.”

Finney has chosen a Mellow Coral (Sherwin Williams – #6324) and paired it with cheerful, plaid bedding. She warns do-it-yourselfers to start with the bedding and work out. “Many a re-do has been frustrated by not finding the perfect bedding to go with your room color. Start with the bedding and then hit the ground running.”

Kristen Finney’s tips for tween decorating:

1. Save yourself frustration by finding your bedding in stock or securing plenty of fabric at your local store. If ordering on-line, get a swatch before purchasing because catalog colors can vary greatly from the real deal. She’s found her plaid bedding for the showcase home at USA Baby in Franklin, Tennessee.

2. Create a cozy spot or reading nook. Tweens love to read and write in their diaries, so encourage that creativity.

3. Warm lighting is important for an inviting setting. Don’t forget to add a nice lamp.

4. Add a little whimsy to the room with a cute accent rug. There are plenty of good choices these days and it will be a nice accessory for your theme or color-scheme. This can also be easily changed to update the room’s look.

5. From Barbies to soccer socks, you’ll need storage, storage, and more storage.

6. Finally, original art is the perfect finishing touch. Ignite a love for art by allowing your little Da Vinci to paint their own canvas or bring in a favorite local artist. Knowing the history of a piece adds so much more to long-term enjoyment. Finney will be featuring the work of Milton, Tennessee artist Robert Power, found locally at ReCreations Furniture, in her child’s room at the Southern Living Showcase Home.

You’ll want to plan on bringing a camera, pad and pen to the Southern Living Showcase Home open select dates October 21 through November 6 at Brentwood’s Dorset Park neighborhood in southern Davidson County.  Finney is part of a team of a dozen designers and faux artisans who are bringing their own decorating magic to the area’s only Southern Living home this fall.
